Part 1: Are Plant Based Omegas as Good as Fish Oil?

In society today, it is common to find people who treat their dogs as if they are their children. Cleanliness, happiness, safety, and overall health. These are a few of the key factors dog owners bend over backward to provide for their best friends. In the effort to give our four-legged friends only the best, we often find ourselves supplementing their diet.

We supplement to aid in health of mind, coat, and joints. A well-known supplement for canine health is fish oil. However, have you ever asked yourself, “are plant based omega’s as good as fish oil omega’s?” Truth is, they’re better!

Sources of Omega-3

There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids. ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid). All forms of omega-3 are long-chain fatty acids.

Fish oil provides the most potent form of DHA and EPA. However, it does not offer ALA. This becomes an issue because the body doesn’t produce ALA naturally. Insert plant based sources of omega-3 which provide ALA, and then converts into DHA and EPA.

Plant Based Omega-3 Benefits

There are numerous benefits of supplementing with plant based omega-3 fatty acids. Many of these benefits stretch beyond the inner workings of one's body. Animal and human alike.

There are more visual benefits such as coat health, joint health, and cognitive function. The additional benefit of the balanced omega-3 (Anti- Inflammatory)  to omega-6 (Inflammatory) ratio. The balance that a plant based oil provides is drastic in comparison to fish oil which is omega-3 heavy. This is vital because the appropriate balance allows for them to function properly.

Omega Balance

Omega balance is important in an animal’s diet. When one’s diet has too much of one omega it limits the metabolic rate of the other omega. Having a balanced ratio allows for both omegas to metabolize properly.

When the omegas are not evenly metabolized and one gets too much omega-6 it can result in inflammatory responses. That being said, the inflammation provided by omega-6 is healthy when balanced with the anti-inflammatory omega-3. Most processed grains and food available for animals have a high omega-6 concentration, thus making omega-3 supplementation important.

Caring for Your Environment

Plant based omega-3 is also more sustainable for the environment in comparison to fish oil. The true problem of using fish oil is in overfishing with “one-third of the world’s fisheries exceeding sustainable limits.” Click here for more information on sustainability.

Shelf Life

Lastly, the shelf life of plant based omegas outlasts fish oil. Fish oil goes rancid after three months when stored properly. When stored improperly can go rancid after only thirty days of being open where plant-based oils. Specifically, Excel’s Camelina oil can last up to two years.

Side Effects of Omega-3

There are very few side effects to supplementing with plant based omega-3 fatty acids and all are mild at that. The side effects for plant based omega-3s include:

  • Diarrhea (To prevent diarrhea, ease the omega supplement into the diet)
  • Bad breath
  • Poor smelling sweat
  • Unpleasant taste

Fish Oil Side Effects

Fish oil side effects are similar to plant based side effects. With the exception that fish oil has the additional concern of contaminants which both farmed and wild fish are exposed to. Fish store omegas in their fat, however, this is also where toxins absorbed by the fish are kept.

This becomes an issue when fats break down for retrieval of omegas resulting in toxins contaminating the omega oil. These toxins held in the fish’s fat from the pollution in our air and water hold serious side effects. The side effects stretching as far to negatively affect one’s immune, nervous and endocrine system.

Camelina comparison.

Plant-Based Oil Highest in Omega-3

Flaxseed is the plant-based oil highest in omega-3. However, this plant-based oil has an uneven ratio with omega-6 which can pose problems. Additionally, flaxseed oil goes rancid quickly as compared to Camelina which can last up to two years.

Camelina, is a plant-based oil high in omega-3 fatty acids that have a preferred ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. This ratio is important because it allows for the omegas to function properly. Resulting in full microbiome function so one can receive all benefits from these essential omegas.
